President Donald Trump suggested on Thursday that the Democratic Party, the FBI, or the Kremlin may have financed a dossier that contained salacious and unverified information that alleged Trump and several of his associates had ties to the Russian government.
“Workers of firm involved with the discredited and Fake Dossier take the 5th. Who paid for it, Russia, the FBI, or the Dems (or all)?” Trump tweeted Thursday morning. He did not offer any evidence that would point to financing by the Democratic Party, the FBI, or Russia.
Two officials from the firm that compiled the dossier, Fusion GPS, appeared before the House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday but refused to answer questions, and instead invoked their fifth amendment right against self-incrimination.
The Washington Post reported in February that the FBI made a deal with Fusion GPS just before the election to contract the agent to continue his work.
However, the FBI did not pay the organization after the dossier surfaced in January 2017.
