Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) tweeted on Tuesday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is trying to ‘sabotage’ the Green New Deal which was proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) last week.
Markey said that McConnell is trying to “silence voters” so that Republicans “don’t have to explain why they are climate change deniers.”
On Tuesday, Sen. McConnell said he would bring the Green New Deal propose for a vote to “Give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel” about the legislative proposal aimed at combating climate change.
After the details of the Green New Deal were published, many Democratic Congress members endorsed the plan — including several senators who have launched presidential campaigns.
The deal was widely mocked by conservatives, citing a FAQ portion that said the proposal would lead to the construction of a high speed rail system so expansive that “air travel stops becoming necessary.”
The proposal also include a passage that said the Green New Deal would establish “economic security for all who are unable or unwilling to work.”
